"I will promise you this: When it is appropriate and this investigation is complete, you will find out what happened and who was responsible, or I will raise fresh hell."
Louisiana Senator John Kennedy responded to the New Year's Day attack in New Orleans that left at least 10 dead and 30 others injured, condemning the act as "objective evil" and promising to "raise fresh hell" if federal authorities do not release details about their investigation, once complete.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, which Kennedy attended along with FBI officials and others in law enforcement, the senator expressed his outrage at the tragedy, which involved a driver identified as Shamud-Din Jabbar, of Houston, Tex. ramming a pickup truck into a crowd on Bourbon Street early in the morning.
"For those people who don't believe in objective evil, all you have to do is look at what happened in our city early this morning,” Kennedy stated. “If this doesn’t trigger the gag reflex of… every fair-minded American, I’ll be very surprised.”
“Here’s what I want to ask from the federal government: Catch these people. Catch these people. And then tell the American people the truth,” Kennedy said.
Kennedy’s comments came as investigations into the attack, which are being overseen by federal authorities, continue. According to an FBI official, investigators do not believe the driver, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, acted alone, and efforts are underway to track down any associates involved.
“I will promise you this: When it is appropriate and this investigation is complete, you will find out what happened and who was responsible, or I will raise fresh hell,” Kennedy added. “And I will chase those in the federal government who are responsible for telling us what happened.”
The suspect drove an EV Ford F-150 into the crowd at approximately 3:15 am on Bourbon Street. After hitting the crowd, Jabbar reportedly exited the vehicle and opened fire on local law enforcement, who returned fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
FBI spokesperson Aletha Duncan confirmed that Jabbar was a US citizen and an Army veteran. Duncan also explained that "An ISIS flag was located on the trailer hitch of the vehicle and the FBI is working to determine the subject's associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. Weapons and potential improvised explosive devices, IEDs, were located within the subject's vehicle. Other IEDs were also located in the French Quarter."
