Adjusting for inflation, the film comes in at about 12th place for domestic releases, according to inflation-adjusted data from Box Office Mojo.
Using ticket prices adjusted for inflation, the top grossing film domestically is "Gone with the Wind," which has brought in nearly $1.9 billion dollars over the lifetime of the film that was released in 1939.

For international numbers not accounting for inflation, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” currently ranks third on the all-time global box-office chart, behind only “Avatar” and “Avengers: Endgame.” The film’s official Instagram account applauded the success in a post, writing, “Thank you to the fans for helping #SpiderManBrandNewDay make cinematic history — it’s now the highest-grossing domestic release of ALL TIME at the North American box office. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, exclusively in theatres.”
The performance represents a major success for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios, which have continued expanding the Spider-Man franchise following the success of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” That film saw immense success after featuring the returns of former Spider-Man actors Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield alongside Tom Holland.
Sony Pictures film chief Tom Rothman told The Hollywood Reporter about the effort to continue the franchise after the popularity of the last movie.
“[Initially,] the problem for a while was, ‘How do you top that?'” Rothman said. “What do we do next when we just put in all our Spider-Men? The strategic decision was — rather than trying what we all thought would be perhaps an empty effort of going quote, unquote bigger — we just went deeper. That was a very conscious choice to focus on how we could make the audience feel.”
The success comes as Hollywood continues to see signs of renewed consumer interest in theatrical releases. The 2026 summer movie season generated $4.765 billion, the most in history. Other films that have been major contributors include Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey,” “Toy Story 5,” and “The Devil Wears Prada 2.”
