On Sunday, police in Edna, Texas, announced that they had arrested a suspected illegal immigrant who is accused of murdering 16-year-old cheerleader Lizbeth Medina on Tuesday.

In a press release reported by the Daily Mail, Chief of Police Rick Boone said, "With countless hours put into this investigation we were able to locate an undocumented male subject, identified as Rafael Govea Romero in the city of Schulenburg."

"Edna Police Department and Texas Rangers immediately traveled to Schulenburg where Romero was placed under arrest for Capital Murder and transported to Jackson County Jail," he added.

"Although Romero is apprehended, we recognize Lizabeth's family and friends are grieving and still need support from the community," Boone noted. "The citizens of Edna can now sleep in peace."

According to ABC, Medina's mother Jacqueline found her dead at their apartment on Tuesday after she failed to show up to the town's Lighted Christmas Parade, where she was supposed to perform with her cheer team.

She told Crossroads Today, "Once I found her, I realized she was gone. I called the police at that very moment." She continued, "Words can't explain what I felt at that moment, finding my daughter in the matter that she was."

Madina suspects that the murder could have been the result of a break-in that her daughter was unfortunately "home at the time."

Friday, police announced that they were searching for a vehicle and person of interest described as possibly having a tattoo behind his right ear, and driving a silver 2010 to 2018 model Ford Taurus.

GoFundMe, set up by Lizbeth's aunt Ana, described her as being, "loved by many but most importantly she is loved and will be missed by the family." She continued, "As a family [sic] we are asking the community for help to not only get Justice for my sweet Lizbeth but for any support that you can offer to my family at this time anything is appreciated."

"You took an angel from me, and not only from me, from a lot of people who loved her," Jacqueline said.
