Taylor Lorenz has used her latest column in the Washington Post to call for Apple and Google app stores to pull Twitter from their offerings. The reason being that Musk has announced that there will be a general amnesty for all banned accounts.
In Lorenz's view, and in the view of those she cited, it is the LGBTQ community and other "marginalized communities" that stand to suffer the most harm from this restoration. Her evidence is that Musk brought back Dr. Jordan Peterson, who she notes was "banned from Twitter for misgendering a trans person."
Peterson noted in a tweet earlier this year that actor Elliot Page, a trans-identified female, once went by a different name. He stated that surgery does not change the actor's sex. He said he would "rather die than delete the tweet," since he is a man that stands on truth.
Lorenz complains that Musk brought back conservative Christian satire site The Babylon Bee, who was banned for speaking truth to the power of the Biden administration by noting, accurately, that Biden's trans diversity hire Rachel Levine is a biological male. After Time Magazine awarded Levine "woman of the year," The Babylon Bee awarded Levine "man of the year," as a joke that apparently was not to Lorenz liking.
She also slams Musk for restoring the personal account of Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who was banned from Twitter on January 2 over alleged "misinformation" regarding COVID-19 vaccines. She tweeted statistics from the federal government's vaccine adverse effect reporting system. Lorenz, as well as the Biden administration, do not want the voluntarily reported information on side-effects from the Covid vaccine to be made public. That reporting system goes back to 1990.
Lorenz also doesn't like that Twitter CEO Musk has interacted with YouTuber Tim Pool, who she falsely claims is "right-wing." Pool has been outspoken about the trend of drag queen shows for kids, calling the events where drag queens, or men dressed clownishly in women's clothing, read, dance, and sing for children. Many of these events have seen children offering tips to topless drag queens.
For Lorenz, being opposed to sexualizing children is "anti-LGBTQ." Lorenz quotes trans activist Alejandra Caraballo, who has blocked this writer on Twitter, who corroborates Lorenz's concerns.
"It's a slap in the face to LGBTQ people," Caraballo said.
"Apple and Google need to seriously start exploring booting Twitter off the app store," Caraballo told Lorenz. "What Musk is doing is existentially dangerous for various marginalized communities. It's like opening the gates of hell in terms of the havoc it will cause. People who engaged in direct targeted harassment can come back and engage in doxing, targeted harassment, vicious bullying, calls for violence, celebration of violence. I can't even begin to state how dangerous this will be."
Musk ran a poll, asking "Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?" The response in favor was overwhelming, leading Musk to announce on Thursday that "The people have spoken. Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei." These were the same words he used after running a poll as to whether former President Donald Trump's account should be restored.
For Lorenz, and others who are used to having their views reinforced by Twitter mods intent on upholding fictions and lies in service to banning and censoring conservatives, this direct communication between CEO and the people of Twitter is nothing less than a facilitation of "disinformation, conspiracies and extremism."
In her view, the allowing of free speech, of a second chance for banned accounts that were censored under the old system, will result in the "targeting" of "public health officials, election officials, journalists and teachers."
While in many cases pundits and left-wing journalists cannot tell the difference between reporting and targeting, Musk has also vowed to crack down on those who, like Lorenz, seek to use the platform to dox or harm others. These include those who make outright threats of violence, or engage in child exploitation, which for Musk is far more important than misgendering a Hollywood actor.
