38-year-old tech executive Nima Momeni was arrested at his home in San Fransisco today for the murder of Cash App founder Bob Lee. 43-year-old Lee, who lives in Miami, was fatally stabbed on April 4th while attending a tech conference in San Francisco.
Momeni had a prior arrest for carrying a switchblade, and may have lied about attending a prominent school in the Bay Area. Initially, many believed that the killing was the work of a homeless person due to the city's high crime rate, but police have since revealed that the suspect and the 43-year-old victim were acquainted.
The suspect claims to have attended UC Berkeley, but there is no record of him ever enrolling. He resided in a rental condominium that also functioned as his living quarters and workspace, but neighbors reported that he was the sole employee.
According to reporting from the Daily Mail, the two were seen together in Momeni’s car around 2:30 am, and they had a confrontation that led to the stabbing. Around 2:35, police responded to the stabbing which took place on the 300 block of Main Street of the Rincon Hill neighborhood.
Lee was transported to the hospital where he ended up succumbing to his injuries. It was originally reported that he was the victim of a “random mugging.”
Momeni is the owner of ExpandIT, who described himself on LinkedIn as a ‘dedicated technology partner since 2005, supporting a variety of client vertical markets in Healthcare, Finance, High Tech/Startup, Technology, Manufacturing and Service sectors.’
Momoni lived in a $700,000 loft apartment complex located in the Emeryville suburb of San Fransisco. Neighbors were surprised to hear that he was charged with the murder. One said “He was quite, quite impressive, a very nice fella and so it's shocking to me as well as all the residents in the building that he's accused of the murder.”
One video after the incident showed Lee desperately trying to get help, first from a random car on the street, and then from the intercom at an apartment building. On the audio released from the 911 call the dispatcher relaying information said "There's a male screaming 'help,' saying 'someone stabbed me,'" and "advised he is bleeding out."
In response to Jake Shields posting about the death of his friend on Twitter, Elon Musk noted that he knows people who have been “severely assaulted” in the city. He added, “violent crime in SF is horrific and even if attackers are caught they are often released immediately.”
