'Tell me how we don't get sucked into superpower conflict': Biden White House on war in Ukraine

In speaking about the conflict, Biden recently said "how do we get to the place where Putin decides he's just going to invade Russia? Nothing like this has happened since World War II."

A senior official with the Biden administration said that the key question being asked in the White House these days is about how to not get dragged into a war with Russia.

"In the case of Ukraine," The New York Times reported, "a senior American official said, the question resonating around the White House is more like: 'Tell me how we don’t get sucked in to a superpower conflict.'"

In speaking about the conflict, Biden recently said "how do we get to the place where Putin decides he'd just going to invade Russia? Nothing like this has happened since World War II."

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said on Sunday that the "green light" has been given for Poland, a NATO allied country, to sed fighter planes to Ukraine. Poland has not yet undertaken the move, and has indicated that they are "concerned about how they would provide the fighters to Ukraine and whether doing so would make them a new target of the Russians," the Times reports.

There have been reports that Americans favor a "no fly zone" over Ukraine, but as the Daily Mail reports, it's unclear as to how many Americans polled know that a "no fly zone" means that the US would shoot down Russian planes that entered that airspace or that Russia would be unlikely to honor the terms of a "no fly zone," thereby ensuring conflict.

According to the Daily Mail, there have been some 17,000 anti-tank weapons given to the Ukrainians in the past week's time as the US continues to send weapons and aid to Ukraine. Biden has consistently said troops would not be sent.

The Mail further reports that "a $350 million package of military aid was approved by Congress on Feb 26" and that most of this aid has already found its way into Ukrainian territory.

The US is trying to sweeten the deal for Poland, offering to replace the MiG-29 fighters it would send to Ukraine to be piloted by Ukrainian pilots. In return for the planes given to Ukraine, the Biden administration has said they would replace them with F16's.
