“We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere.”

The Guardian has revealed it will no longer post from its official account on X, citing claims that X is a “toxic media platform” and that Elon Musk has been able to influence public opinion. With over 10 million followers since joining the platform in 2009, the outlet has decided to prioritize its resources on reporting through other channels.

“We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X (formerly Twitter),” the outlet announced. “We think that the benefits of being on X are now outweighed by the negatives and that resources could be better used promoting our journalism elsewhere.”

The Guardian’s decision explained on its website, attributed its departure to an environment of so-called "far-right conspiracies" and "racism" on X. It also claimed that the presidential election proved that X is a “toxic media platform and that its owner, Elon Musk, has been able to use its influence to shape political discourse.”

Despite this withdrawal, X users will still be able to share Guardian articles, and the publication may embed X content for live news coverage. Reporters will continue using X as a tool for newsgathering without direct editorial account engagement.

This move aligns with several other public figures leaving X, including former CNN host Don Lemon, who cited the platform’s new terms of service as a factor in his decision.

Meanwhile, Musk has emphasized his commitment to fostering free speech and open discourse on X since he purchased the platform. The tech billionaire has made it clear that he is committed to allowing the free discussion of ideas on X as long as posts do not violate the law. Following the electoral victory of Donald Trump, Musk highlighted the elevated role of citizen journalism in today’s media landscape.

“The reality of this election was plain to see on X, while most legacy media lied relentlessly to the public,” Musk posted after the election. “You are the media now. Please post your thoughts & observations on X, correct others when wrong and we will have at least one place in the world where you can come to find the truth.”
