“That is what makes us fearful. They say this could change because [Trump and Harris] could both close the CBP One appointment and all the services that are helping migrants."
The caravan left Tapachula, a border town with Guatemala, on Sunday beginning an almost 2,000 mile journey to the US southern border. The contingent is full of people from across Central America who believe even if Trump does not win, that Vice President Kamala Harris will move to restrict asylum entry and illegal immigration into the US.
“That is what makes us fearful. They say this could change because they could both close the CBP One appointment and all the services that are helping migrants,” said Venezuelan Joel Zambrano, referring to US Customs and Border Protection’s online site that offers migrants access to an application for asylum that lets them into the country. In the last two years, aside from the millions of illegal immigrants that have entered the US, 1.3 million have used the CBP One app to enter the country.
Trump has told his rally audiences that he will close the border to illegal immigrants, deport those who are already here and invoke the death penalty for illegal immigrants who kill Americans or police officers. Harris – who recently visited the Arizona border with Mexico – has suggested she will be more vigilant about border security than President Joe Biden. However, she has still pushed for a bill that would allow at least 1.4 illegal immigrants into the country each year.
“I will do more to secure our border, to reduce illegal border crossings,” Harris said during her first visit to the border as the Democratic presidential nominee. “I will take further action to keep the border closed between ports of entry.” she said, according to the Post. However during the Biden-Harris administration, deportation of illegal immigrants dropped by 74 percent
Reports of sex trafficking of migrant children has tripled under Biden-Harris administration, according to federal Health and Human Service Department records and CBP has warned that many children coming over the border are being subject to exploitation.
Earlier this month, caravans of 800 and 600 migrants also began the trek northward to America. “The situation in my country is very bad, the president doesn’t do anything for us,” said Honduran Roberto Domínguez, 48, who is on the verge of departing Tapachula.
