Golden Globes co-hosts Tina Fey and Amy Poehler slammed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for lack of diversity during Sunday night’s award show, but failed to mention political scandals like they have in years past.
HFPA, who is responsible for putting on the award show, faced criticism in the week’s leading up to the Golden Globes after it was discovered that the group consists of zero Black voting members.
The two co-hosts spared no time in their opening monologue blasting the press association for their lack of diversity.
"The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is made up of around 90 international no-Black journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life," said actress Tina Fey. "We say around 90 because a couple of them might be ghosts, and it's rumored that the German member is just a sausage that somebody drew a little face on."
The co-hosts of the 78 annual Golden Globes continued mocking the HFPA, joking that Pixar's "Soul" is a "beautiful Pixar animated movie where a middle-aged Black man's soul accidentally gets knocked out of his body into a cat. The HFPA really responded to this movie because they do have five cat members."
Co-host Amy Poehler added that the public is "understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices. Look, a lot of flashy garbage got nominated but that happens. That's like their thing. But a number of Black actors and Black-led projects were overlooked," Fox News reported. "We all know awards shows are stupid," Fey joked.
The co-hosts opening monologue was noteworthy as the comedic duo failed to mention politics like they have in years past, turning a blind-eye to Governor Cuomo’s (D-NY) sexual assault allegations as both comedians were at the forefront advocating for the 'Me Too' movement.
Governor Cuomo has been under fire over the past few weeks after scandals surfaced involving Gov. Cuomo, including two woman accusing him of sexual harassment and allegedly underreporting nursing home coronavirus deaths to avoid federal scrutiny.
