In just the first week of their operation, Toronto police's 16 teams dedicated to cracking down on illegal gatherings have now charged 230 different people.
Since Apr. 22, the teams have responded to 315 incidents, of which 105 are calls for illegal gatherings.
According to a press release on Friday, the Toronto Police stated:
"The pandemic presents both public health and public safety risks. We have an enforcement team in every division across the city and officers are dispersing large gatherings daily and laying charges against those who are ignoring the emergency order."
"As we head in to the weekend, we are discouraging anyone who is thinking of attending or hosting a gathering, and reminding them that, if they do, they may very well expect the police in attendance as well. Please work with us to keep the city safe. Don't attend parties or large gatherings. Stay home and stay safe."
Ironically, the police have roundly rejected new powers granted to them allowing them to stop, search and question people to find out why they are out of the house. According to the same press release "are not compelled to explain why they are out of their residence."
