The Trudeau government is considering a ban on foreign nationals as well as other travel restrictions in an attempt to tackle the new Omicron variant.
Having said that, officials have told reporters that this step would be unlikely at this current time.
Other measures being considered include changing the travel advisory against non-essential travel, according to CTV News. This is likely to change on Wednesday.
"Canadians who are thinking of travelling abroad need to be warned that the situation abroad is both risky and unstable," said Trudeau's health minister.
Trudeau and the premiers had a discussion on Tuesday where they strategized how they could stop the spread of COVID-19. One idea is requiring all travellers to take a test at the airport.
Currently, Canada only tests travellers at random.
Canada's chief medical officer has also warned about the consequences of the new variant, saying cases could "rapidly escalate in the days to come."
"We know how to work together to flatten that curve and we need to do that pretty rapidly, starting now," she added. "As with other waves of the pandemic, rapid action and reducing contact [are] key to preventing that very sharp peak."
