The federal Liberals lead the way in a new poll that ranks voter support in Canadian politics. In the survey by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies, 27 percent of respondents said that they would vote Liberal if an election were to be held tomorrow.
Many anticipate Trudeau to kick off an election this month. It is something Leger's executive vice president Christian Bourque claims will be an issue for other political parties who hope to gain vote momentum.
"If you're the Conservatives, the concern would be that if the writ really is dropped in mid-August, you're coming into it without any momentum," Bourque said to The Canadian Press. "Usually parties like to come into an election campaign with a little bit of wind at their back. But that's not happening right now for the Conservatives nor for the NDP."
The Conservatives came in second in the Leger survey with 24 percent of voter support among respondents, the NDP came in third at 16 percent, Bloc Quebecois and Greens obtained 7 percent and 4 percent respectively, and the People's Party of Canada received 3 percent of the vote from respondents.
The Liberals also managed to be ahead of everyone else in terms of the 1,737 respondents who identified as decided voters with 36 percent, stating that they would vote for Trudeau. The online survey was conducted from July 30 to August 1 – polling 2,079 Canadians. Internet-based polls are not considered random samples, however.
