Up to 100 million relief cheques have been issued by the federal government since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, according to Blacklock's Reporter.
"The emergency payments being issued to vulnerable Canadians during the Covid-19 pandemic are resulting in a significant increase in payments in the current 2020-2021 fiscal year," reads a report from the Department of Public Works. "Initial estimates suggest as many as 100 million additional payments could be issued in the current fiscal year."
The spending of the federal government in 2020 was unprecedented in Canadian history, with the deficit reaching $381.6 billion, more than seven times higher than the previous high reached in 2010.
"Right now we are focused on supporting families through this crisis," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said when asked if the Canadian government could afford the spending.
The government is yet to release a new budge for 2021, which would be the government's first since 2019.
