Trudeau refuses to recognize Uyghur genocide, says genocide is a 'loaded term'

"We've already laid out very clearly the consequences for the human rights violations that are going on in China right now," added Trudeau.

In an interview with CTV News, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau once again refused to say that the Chinese government's treatment of the Uyghur people was a genocide.

Trudeau said that genocide was a loaded term and that the Chinese government should be investigated before the international community jumps to a conclusion. China, of course, will not allow this investigation to take place.

CTV host Evan Solomon told Trudeau that the "US and UK think there's a genocide going on against the Uyghurs, the Muslim minority, as do the opposition parties."

He then asked, "do you believe there's a genocide?"

Trudeau responded by saying "I believe there needs to be a full investigation into it and I believe there are human rights violations that need to be exposed and accounted for."

"We've already laid out very clearly the consequences for the human rights violations that are going on in China right now," added Trudeau.

"We're going to continue to act strongly on that. But, the word genocide is such a significantly loaded word. We know there needs to be a proper investigation into these allegations of genocide."

Neither Trudeau nor his cabinet voted for a bill that recognized the Uyghur genocide, although Parliament voted strongly in favour.
