Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Tuesday that he intends to stay-put as leader of Canada's Liberals into the next election.

When asked whether he would remain leader, Trudeau gave a firm "yes," before receiving applause from his new cabinet.

Trudeau had previously said on several occasions that there was "more work to do," but had never directly answered the question of whether he would step down.

Questions of Trudeau's leadership and likability began to arrise after a disappointing election, where the Liberals gained just three seats over their 2019 tally. The Party again fell short of reaching the 170 necessary for a majority, in a costly election during the start of Canada's 4th wave of COVID.

The next scheduled date for a federal election is October 2025, though a vote of non-confidence could dissolve government sooner. Trudeau could also call an election at any time.
