Left-leaning media melted down in response to former President Donald Trump’s announcement Tuesday night that he will seek another term in the White House. The Washington Post ran with the the headline “Trump, who as president fomented an insurrection, says he is running again.”
“Donald Trump, 76,," they wrote, "refused to admit defeat in the 2020 election, was impeached twice and is the subject of multiple criminal investigations. His entry shifts the dynamics of the GOP field while increasing the likelihood that President Biden runs for reelection.”
Fox News contributor Sara Carter pointed out on Twitter, “The Washington Post, which published years of lies from a fake dossier and biased sources to weaponize the news - is working overtime with Trump’s enemies to do it again.” The Washington Post notably corrected and retracted articles on the Steele Dossier, the discredited documents used to impeach Trump over Russia collusion, which turned out to be a hoax.
The New York Times wrote, “Trump Announces 2024 Run, Repeating Lies and Exaggerating Record.” According to the Grey Lady, “Former President Trump made many false claims during speech at Mar-a-Lago as Republican remained one seat away from clinching House control.”
Decision Desk had called the races which gave control of the US House of Representatives to the Republicans hours before Trump’s announcement.
MSNBC declared, “Trump is running, and the GOP is trapped in a prison of its own making.”
NPR lamented, "Donald Trump, who tried to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election and inspired a deadly riot at the Capitol in a desperate attempt to keep himself in power, has filed to run for president again in 2024."
Perhaps the most egregious of the night was the Seattle Times which in rushing to post an Associated Press wire story of Trump’s announcement, failed to proofread the headline: “Trump seeks White House again amid amid legal probes, GOP loses.”
According to the Daily Wire, “every major mainstream media outlet has seen a massive traffic drop since President Donald Trump left office.”
The day before then President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration, the Washington Post’s media reporter Paul Farhi posted a graphic on Twitter showing the collapse in traffic for 25 of the most well-known mainstream print and broadcast media outlets, including his own outlet. All but one showed a massive drop in traffic from June 2020 to June 2021.
While the media pretended to mourn Trump's announcement, Democrats chose to profit off the opportunity. According to Ben Shapiro, editor emeritus of the Daily Wire, the Democrats and President Joe Biden took advantage of the announcement by sending out fundraising emails.
