“The Republicans MUST DO, with PASSION, and at the expense of everything else, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT."
Trump posted to Truth Social, “The Republicans MUST DO, with PASSION, and at the expense of everything else, THE SAVE AMERICA ACT - And not the watered down version. This is a Country Defining fight for the Soul of our Nation!”
He added in a follow-up post, summarizing points of the SAVE Act, saying, that “all voters must show ID” as well as “show proof of citizenship in order to vote.”
“No mail-in ballots (except for illness, disability, military, or travel!)” he added in the post.
In addition to this, he slammed Democrats on the transgender issue, saying that there should be “no men in women’s sports” and “no transgender mutilation surgery for children, without the express written approval of the parents.”
Trump, as well as a number of Republicans, have been pushing to get the SAVE Act passed in the Senate. It has already cleared a vote in the House, but is facing opposition from a select few Senate Republicans, including Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Others, such as Utah Senator John Curtis, as well as Thom Tillis, have indicated that they will not vote in favor of forcing a talking filibuster in order to get the SAVE Act passed.
Mitch McConnell has also shown apprehension about passing the SAVE Act.
The filibuster has traditionally been thought of as a Senator standing up and talking for hours at a time in order to hold up Senate procedure. This is a talking filibuster; but that has become something of a relic over the last 50 years. Over the last few decades, the silent filibuster (the threat of using the filibuster) has become more commonplace.
However, several Republicans, including Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) have been pushing to force the Democrats into a talking filibuster in order to pass the SAVE Act.
Lee told The Post Millennial, “President Trump asked us to pass the SAVE America Act without delay, identifying it as our top legislative priority. Requiring and exhausting a Democrat speaking filibuster is the only plan to pass the bill. While that approach would require an investment of time and effort by Senate Republicans, victory would prove more than worth the hard work."
Despite 71 percent of Democrats supporting voter ID laws, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has said that doing so is akin to "Jim Crow."
