President Donald Trump has said that the United States will be dealing "directly" with Iran in a high-level meeting regarding a nuclear deal come this Saturday. He made the comments in Monday's White House appearance with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

"We have a very big meeting on Saturday, and we're dealing with them directly," the president told reporters from the Oval Office as he answered questions regarding trade as well as tariff policy with Netanyahu. Israel has promised to drop all trade barriers for US goods.

The meeting will be the first time that the US will be meeting with Iran directly since Trump met with the country in 2018 when the US pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), per Fox News. "We’ll see what can happen. I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious," the president said in reference to attacking Iran.

The meeting comes after Trump made the threat that the US would bomb Iran if the country's leaders do not make a deal regarding their nuclear program with the United States.

"[That’s] not something that I want to be involved with, or frankly, that Israel wants to be involved with, if they can avoid it," Trump added. "We're going to see if we can avoid it. It's getting to be very dangerous territory. And hopefully those talks will be successful."

The talks come amid the Trump administration's focus on shifting trade between the US and other countries.
