Trump’s arrival at Washington’s Northwest Stadium drew loud applause and jeers from fans as he appeared on the jumbotron from a stadium suite.
President Donald Trump attended Sunday’s NFL game between the Washington Commanders and the Detroit Lions, marking the first time a sitting president has attended a regular-season NFL game since 1978.
Trump’s arrival at Washington’s Northwest Stadium applause and chants from fans as he appeared on the jumbotron from a stadium suite.
During the game's halftime ceremony, Trump read the Oath of Enlistment to service members who were on the field, which received some boos from the audience.
The president also stepped into the broadcast booth, where he called a few plays as the game continued in the third quarter.
The president attended the game as part of the NFL’s “Salute to Service” initiative, which honors US military veterans. Air Force One performed a flyover above the stadium before Trump’s arrival.
"I just want to say, was that the greatest flyover ever? Nobody's ever done a flyover like that," Trump told reporters before heading to the game.
Trump was expected to watch the game alongside Commanders principal owner Josh Harris, who has been in discussions with DC officials and the White House about plans for a new stadium in Washington, which is set to be completed in 2030. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth was seen speaking with Harris before kickoff, and House Speaker Mike Johnson joined Trump in attendance at the game.
The White House has floated the idea of naming the new Commanders stadium after Trump, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Friday calling it a “beautiful idea.”
