President Donald Trump is set to attend his first NFL game of the season over the weekend, where he will watch the Washington, DC Commanders take on the Detroit Lions on Sunday evening.

The news was broken by ESPN host Pat McAfee, who confirmed Trump would be at the game. "Sources are telling me that Donald Trump will be in attendance for this Washington Commanders game against the Detroit Lions," McAfee said.

"He will be there to celebrate the veteran celebration that is taking place at half-time. He will be sitting in Josh Harris' [Commanders owner] box," McAfee added.

The Commanders' team president Mark Clouse said of the news, "We are honored to welcome President Trump to the game as we celebrate those who have served and continue to serve our country."

"The entire Commanders organization is proud to participate in the NFL’s league-wide Salute to Service initiative, recognizing the dedication and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, active-duty service members, and their families this Sunday," Clouse added.

Trump's last appearance at an NFL game came during the 2025 Superbowl earlier this year, where he walked out onto the field with his daughter Ivanka as well as his son Eric Trump. He has made other appearances at sporting events, such as multiple college football games, the Club World Cup, and others.

Earlier in the fall, Trump also attended the Yankees Detroit Tigers baseball game in New York City on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

The move from Trump to attend the game also comes as the president has pressed to have the Commanders change their name back to the Washington Redskins. He wrote on Truth Social in July, "The Washington 'Whatever’s' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team."

"There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!" he added at the time.
