“We are flying right over it right now,” President Trump said. “So we thought this would be appropriate.”
President Trump signed a Gulf of America Day proclamation on Sunday as he flew on Air Force One en route to the Super Bowl in New Orleans, which sits on the body of water.
“We are flying right over it right now,” President Trump said. “So we thought this would be appropriate.”
Trump also joked that the signing was “even bigger than the Super Bowl,” before the pilot would say on the loudspeaker that “Air Force One is currently in international waters, for the first time in history, flying over the recently renamed Gulf of America.”
The move comes after some controversy over the renaming, though American companies have evidently already warmed up to it. Last week, Google posted to X that they would be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico on all their maps to the Gulf of America after President Donald Trump issued an executive order making the change. They will also be using the new name Mount McKinley instead of Denali.
"We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps. We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources," the tech giant said on X.
Oil giant Chevron also announced in a statement that it would be using the new name for its future reports.
The Department of the Interior has already announced that their map changes will be implemented to match the order. "As directed by the President, the Gulf of Mexico will now officially be known as the Gulf of America and North America’s highest peak will once again bear the name Mount McKinley. These changes reaffirm the Nation’s commitment to preserving the extraordinary heritage of the United States and ensuring that future generations of Americans celebrate the legacy of its heroes and historic assets," the Interior Dept. said.
