Amidst skyrocketing gas prices and the ongoing invasion of Ukraine by Russia, former President Donald Trump said that sitting president Joe Biden is letting "'radical climate extremists' run our country while the world burns."

In an interview with Fox News, Trump bashed Biden, placing blame with him in regards to US gas prices that have reached new records for national average prices.

"Energy prices are skyrocketing — they are going to infinity, all because of Joe Biden," Trump told Fox News.

Trump's comments come after the national average price skyrocketed past the previous record of $4.11 in 2008. The national average was $4.318 as of Thursday, according to data from the American Automobile Association.

Earlier this week, Biden announced that the US would be banning imports of Russian energy, warning that the action would cost American families.

"This was a war that should have never happened," Trump told Fox News. "There is no way Putin would have done it if I were president."

In response to rising gas prices, which had been steadily climbing before Russia’s invasion, Biden faces calls for him to open up oil and gas drilling within the US to lessen the country’s dependence on foreign oil.

"We have the oil under our feet, liquid gold. But instead, we are thinking of buying oil from Venezuela, Iran and others who do not exactly love America," Trump said in response to reports that the Biden Administration has been considering purchasing oil from Iran, Saudi Arabia and Venezuela to fill the gaps left by Russian oil.

"Joe Biden is letting the radical climate extremists run our country, while the world burns," Trump said. "Everyone is suffering because our leaders have no idea what they are doing."

"Bring back American energy independence and American dominance," he added.

In response to questions regarding climbing gas prices, a number of Biden officials have stated that people should purchase electric vehicles so they wouldn’t have to purchase gasoline.

On Thursday, the White House tweeted about electric vehicles, saying that people like Putin will never be able to use fossil fuels as weapons against other nations when widespread usage of these cars is achieved.

Caleb Hull, "content, comms, and viral video" created with Ballistic Social, noted though that the energy that these cars pull from and are created with are still done with fossil fuels.

According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center, "Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and all-electric vehicles (EVs)—collectively referred to as plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—store electricity in batteries to power one or more electric motors. The batteries are charged primarily by plugging into off-board sources of electricity, produced from natural gas, coal, nuclear energy, wind energy, hydropower, and solar energy."
