"I felt I had left a mark that would last," the AI Roosevelt said of the canal.
Ahead of a dedication ceremony for the new Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library on Wednesday, Trump was seen having a conversation with an AI version of the 26th president.
In a snippet of the conversation posted to social media, Roosevelt was heard telling Trump, "every day, a president faces storms most people never see, but if you keep your nerve and remember the nation comes first, you get through. I know you know that feeling yourself."
Trump replied, "I appreciate those words. Those words are fantastic, and I just want to say it’s an honor to be with you today, and we’re making a little bit of a tour of some of the fantastic things you’ve done."
Trump also asked the AI avatar of Roosevelt whether he thought the Panama Canal was his greatest achievement. "Right then, yes, the canal stands as one of my proudest battles, no question. But greatness is a strange thing. It isn't always the biggest or boldest job that matters most. Panama Canal showed what America could achieve if we held steady and acted fast when the world dragged its feet," Roosevelt said.
The avatar added, "when I stood in the mud watching those steam shovels, knowing ships would pass through, changing the world's map forever, I felt I had left a mark that would last."
Trump also brought with him the Medal of Honor that was given to Roosevelt by Congress, which had been displayed in the Roosevelt Room of the White House. The medal was displayed alongside the Medal of Honor posthumously given to Roosevelt’s son for leading troops at Normandy on D-Day.
Per Forbes, the AI-powered avatar at the library’s Talk with TR interactive experience was created with the help of Microsoft AI technology. Microsoft relied on items such as diary entries, letters, speeches, and telegrams to craft the AI version of the president. Conversations are rated PG, meaning visitors of all ages can ask questions.
Laura Hoffman, senior director and program manager at Microsoft’s AI for Good Lab, said, "The AI version of Theodore Roosevelt is built with multiple safeguards to ensure it reflects the historical record rather than a modern interpretation. Each response is linked back to source materials, allowing users to trace and verify the historical basis of what they are hearing."
