The officials were working "behind the scenes" to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran.

Earlier on Thursday, reports came out that Trump had conveyed to Tehran that the United States would not carry out a strike against Iran, as the regime has been killing protesters in the thousands. Officials with Qatar as well as Saudi Arabia reportedly led efforts to influence Trump on the decision.

The officials were working “behind the scenes” to ease tensions between Washington and Tehran in an effort to avert an attack, according to the Jerusalem Post. Other reports had indicated that Egypt was also involved in the talks. Trump had reportedly told Tehran that the United States did not intend to strike Iran, but demanded that the killing would stop, according to Pakistani outlet Dawn

This report followed comments Trump made on Wednesday evening, where he said he had been briefed that killings tied to Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests were decreasing as he had demanded.

“We were told that the killing in Iran is stopping, and there’s no plan for executions,” Trump said in the Oval Office. "I’ve been told that on good authority. We’ll find out about it. I’m sure if it happens, I’ll be very upset.”

On Thursday, Trump wrote on Truth Social, "FoxNews: 'Iranian protester will no longer be sentenced to death after President Trump’s warnings. Likewise others.' This is good news. Hopefully, it will continue!"

The developments come after escalating tensions between the White House and Tehran. Earlier this week, Trump had suggested that there would be US action in Iran as the regime has been killing protesters in the thousands.

"Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING - TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price. I have cancelled all meetings with Iranian Officials until the senseless killing of protesters STOPS. HELP IS ON ITS WAY. MIGA!!! PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP,” the president wrote on Truth Social on Tuesday.
