US Attorney Ed Martin reached out to Georgetown Law School Dean William Treanor over the school's alleged continuation of teaching and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion. Martin told Treanor that he's opened an "inquiry" into the matter, calling the continuation of DEI in the school "unacceptable."

He asked Treanor two questions: "First, have you eliminated all DEI from your school and its curriculum? Second, if DEI is found in your courses or teaching in any way, will you move swiftly to remove it?"

Martin noted that under no circumstances would a student who applies for a Department of Justice fellowship or internship program who is applying from "or affiliated with a law school or university that continues to teach and utilize DEI" be considered.

Martin resent the letter to Treanor on March 3 after an email delivery issue was resolved, saying that he would appreciate if Treanor could address the concerns "this week." This week is also, Martin noted, when he is set to begin reviewing applicants for attorney positions and the internship program. Georgetown students and alumni will not currently be considered due to the DEI concerns.

In his "welcome" page on the Georgetown Law website, Treanor highlights the importance of DEI as he sees it. "At Georgetown Law," Treanor writes, "we are committed to the Jesuit concept of cura personalis – educating the whole person – and advancing justice through the law. Central to these core values is an emphasis on holistic learning, wellness, and creating a campus culture where all community members can thrive. This commitment is also evidenced in our work in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Our belief in the critical importance of DEI is rooted in our founding as an institution that has always sought to open more doors and to be a force for social justice."

In 2022, Treanor gave an update on the DEI committment at Georgetown Law, highlighting a program designed to help students "from backgrounds historically underrepresented in law school and the legal profession." He noted that the head of that program is " a first-generation Nigerian-American." He also said that the school was "in the process of restaffing the Office of Equity and Inclusion, based on the recommendations of the Inclusion Council." Treanor also came under fire from City Journal writers in 2021 for allowing the termination of a professor who said openly that she wished her black students were performing better after she was called racist for those remarks.

In March 2024, the House Oversight Committee launched an investigation into the Transition Integrity Project, a "partisan exercise," housed at the Georgetown Law School. Sen. Jeff Sessions wrote to the head of the project, saying that he had been "particularly concerned by the activities of TIP in 2020, and any similar endeavor in advance of the 2024 election, because this exercise seems to have been administered adjacent to the Georgetown University Law Center." In September 2024, Georgetown University hosted a terrorist who had formerly been with Hamas, the Palestinian terror group that initiated a massacre of 1,200 Israelis, kidnapping over 200, on October 7, 2023.

Georgetown was also one of the schools that offered safe spaces, self-care, and "mindfulness" activities after the 2024 election for students who were too stressed out about the results to deal with themselves. An email sent out to students at the Georgetown McCourt School of Public Policy at the time revealed that a "self-care suite" would be offered the day after the election. “In recognition of these stressful times,” director of student engagement Jaclyn Clevenger wrote, per the Free Press, “all McCourt community members are welcome to gather. . . in the 3rd floor Commons to take a much needed break, joining us for mindfulness activities and snacks throughout the day."
