“This has been 155 years in the making. It’s becoming real because we never talked about it and now we are.”
At a ceremony Saturday, the US Navy apologized for bombarding the Alaskan native village of Kake in the late 1860s, The Guardian reported. “This has been 155 years in the making,” said Joel Jackson, the president of the Organized Village of Kake, of the apology. “It’s becoming real because we never talked about it and now we are.”
The Navy will also apologize to the Lingit First Nation—also known as the Tlingit people—for following up the bombarding of Kake with a second assault on Angoon in 1882. Rear Adm. Mark Sucato offered the first apology and it’s anticipated he will be on hand to deliver the second that is planned for Oct. 26—the 142nd anniversary of the Angoon bombardment.
The US Navy has issued the apology because it says it was wrong to use the villages of Kake and Angoon as targets that “inflicted multigenerational trauma” on its residents. Navy public affairs officer Julianne Leinenveber said the “pain and suffering inflicted upon the Tlingit people warrants these long overdue apologies,” according to The Washington Post. The bombardments were a result of hostilities between the tribe and the US government which purchased Alaska from the Russian empire in 1867.
The ceremony was a mixture of military protocol and native ritual, with tribal leaders sharing the stage with naval officers, including the chaplain. Local indigenous native dancers performed with the US Navy Band. There might be more historical revision in store for the US military. The Post reported in July that the Department of Defense is also reassessing whether 20 Medals of Honor should have been awarded after the Seventh Cavalry shot and killed hundreds of Lakota Indians at Wounded Knee in 1890. Also, the US Navy recently commissioned its first “gender-neutral” submarine.
