Today is November 11. Remembrance Day. Today we honour the brave Canadians who fought and died for our freedoms.
A song that is often shared around this time of the year is "Highway of Heroes" by Canadian band "the Trews."
The Canadian Armed Forces' YouTube channel has a beautiful music video to go along with the touching song. It is sure to leave you with goosebumps.
The "Highway of Heroes" is a portion of Highway 401 in Ontario, Canada. It is a part of a relatively new tradition.
When a soldier lost their life during the war in Afghanistan their body was sent back to Canada in a flag-draped casket, arriving at Canadian Forces Base Trenton (CFB Trenton). After a short ceremony, the body was taken to the Centre for Forensic Sciences in Toronto, over 150km away.
Average Canadian citizens, first responders and veterans would line overpasses and bridges on the way to the forensic centre – this is where they would pay their respects to the fallen.
The tradition started with just a few hundred people and quickly took off.
