For the first time, former secretary of state and first lady Hillary Clinton read out loud the speech she would have given if she won the 2016 presidential election.
An emotional Clinton read her speech in an excerpt of her Masterclass talk on the power of resilience shared by the Today Show, which will be released in full on on the platform Thursday.
"In this lesson, I'm going to face one of my most public defeats head on by sharing with you the speech I had hoped to deliver if I had won the 2016 election," Clinton said in the video. "This was supposed to be the victory speech that I would have delivered on election night in New York, on November the eighth of 2016."
"I've never shared this with anybody. I've never read it out loud. But it helps to encapsulate who I am, what I believe in and what my hopes were for. The kind of country that I want for my grandchildren and that I want for the world that I believe in is America at its best," she continued.
In her speech, Clinton talked about what would have been the groundbreaking victory of the first female president, and how she had hoped to set an example for young children that anyone can be president.
Clinton started welling up when reading a section in which a writer had asked her "if I could go back in time and tell anyone in history about this milestone who would it be?"
"And the answer was easy. My mother Dorothy," said Clinton.
Clinton highlighted the difficult childhood of her mother, being placed in the care of her grandparents that mistreated and her sister.
"I wish I could walk down the aisle and find the little wooden seats where she sat, holding tight to her even younger sister alone, terrified. She doesn't yet know how much she will suffer. She doesn't yet know she will find the strength to escape that suffering. That is still a long way off. The whole future is still unknown," said Clinton, holding back tears.
"I dream of going up to her and sitting down next to her, taking her in my arms and saying 'look at me. Listen to me. You will survive. You will have a good family of your own and three children and as hard as it might be to imagine your daughter will grow up and become the president of the United States,'" she continued.
"America is the greatest country in the world. And from tonight going forward together, we will make America even greater than it has ever been for each and every one of us. Thank you God bless you. And may God bless America," she concluded.
