Following Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's suspension from Facebook and ban from Twitter earlier this week, fellow Rep. Matt Gaetz said her Big Tech exile came not from "spreading misinformation," but rather from "challenging the regime."
"What Americans should know is that Marjorie Taylor Greene hasn't been banned from Twitter or removed from Facebook because she spread misinformation. If misinformation got you off of digital platforms, then CNN wouldn't be able to post anything after the Russia hoax. Rachel Maddow would be banished to the digital hinterlands as a consequence of what she said about vaccines always stopping the virus in every circumstance," said Gaetz on Newsmax.
"No, this is about challenging the regime," Gaetz continued.
Gaetz noted that a number of Greene's comments have been true and that "she got a strike for suggesting that obesity is a really challenging comorbidity when evaluating someone's frailty with coronavirus. And that is true a way we can be more personally resilient is to be healthier."
"And so this is really about silencing someone who has the courage to stand up against that regime," said Gaetz.
Gaetz continued on to express his disappointment with some of his Republican colleagues, saying "we were talking more about Kwanzaa than we were about Marjorie Taylor Greene getting banned from Twitter. "
"And so you know, you're right. Well, can't just complain about this. We have to mobilize into action. I think that means seeking out alternative digital platforms like Rumble, GETTR, Parler, but it also means legislating so that this cannot happen in the future," Gaetz went on.
"I think we need to do more than just regulate big tech or trim around the edges. I think we need to break up Big Tech, and I would even work with Democrats to do it," Gaetz added.
On Sunday, Greene was banned from Twitter over alleged "misinformation" regarding COVID-19 vaccines. While Greene's personal account was suspended, her professional account remains active. Twitter said that the suspension was enacted after "repeated violations" of their coronavirus policies.
"We permanently suspended the account you referenced (@mtgreenee) for repeated violations of our COVID-19 misinformation policy. We’ve been clear that, per our strike system for this policy, we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy," Twitter told The Hill.
The day after Greene received her permanent ban from Twitter, she was also temporarily suspended from posting on Facebook.
Greene wrote on Telegram in response to her Facebook suspension:
"Facebook has joined Twitter in censoring me. This is beyond censorship of speech. I'm an elected Member of Congress representing over 700,000 US tax paying citizens and I represent their voices, values, defend their freedoms, and protect the Constitution."
"But apparently they too think the CDC managed #VAERS system on our own government websites are misinformation. And to date there has been ZERO investigation into reported Covid deaths from government mandated #covid vaccines," Greene continued. "Who appointed Twitter and Facebook to be the authorities of information and misinformation?" she questioned.
"When Big Tech decides what political speech of elected Members is accepted and what’s not then they are working against our government and against the interest of our people," the Republican congresswoman declared on Telegram.
