Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath has called for the firing or resignation of Solicitor General Sylvia Jones after her invoking of a "police state" last week.
"For a Solicitor General for the province of Ontario to impose a police state is absolutely abhorrent, and yes, I believe she needs to go, absolutely," said Horwath of Jones.
"Instead of listening to public health, he decided to bring a police state to our province," said Horwath of Ford.
Ford and Jones announced during a Friday press conference that police and bylaw officers would be given special authorities to enforce public health measures for the duration of the stay-at-home order.
This would allow police officers to ask why people are not at home, and what their place of residence is. Refusal to answer this could have resulted in a $750 fine.
The Ford government would quickly walk back the police powers as they did with banning playgrounds. This was a result of swift and fierce backlash from many Ontarians, including several police forces.
Within days of the announced measures, all but three of Ontario's 45 provincially-mandated police forces came out against police randomly stopping those not at home.
