Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that Canada is now aiming at reducing emissions by 40 to 45 percent of 2005's levels, after the Liberals "blew past" previous climate targets.

Canada's previous targets were set for a 30 percent reduction of 2005 levels.

The announcement was made during the opening remarks of the Leader's Summit on Climate, hosted by US President Joe Biden.

"Climate change knows no borders, and we cannot tackle it alone. Over the next two days, I will be meeting virtually with President Biden and other leaders from around the world for the Leaders Summit on Climate. The Summit is an important opportunity to discuss the urgent need and economic benefits of stronger climate action," Trudeau said in a statement released on Thursday.

According to his official itinerary, Trudeau will participate in the Investing in Climate Solutions session of the Leaders Summit on Climate, alongside Environment Minister Jonathan Wilkinson, and International Development Minister Karina Gould.
