A remarkable scene played out at the White House coronavirus press briefing on Monday evening.
President Trump was asked by a Chinese reporter from Hong Kong Phoenix TV about cooperating with China on the coronavirus pandemic.
“Are you cooperating with China?” She asked.
“Who are you working for, China?” Trump replied.
“No, I’m working for Hong Kong Phoenix TV.”
Trump interrogated her answer. “Who owns that, China? Is it owned by the state?”
“It’s based in Hong Kong,” she said.
He pressed: “No, is it owned by the state?”
“No, it’s not, it’s a privately owned company.”
“Okay, good,” Trump replied. “Look, I’ll let you know, I’ll give you an answer in a couple of months. Because it’s time for them to help us. It’s time right now for China to help us. And hopefully they do. And if they don’t then that’s okay too. But we signed a deal, and it was signed with great good will and spirit. And it’s time that our farmers benefited and that our manufacturers benefit.” He said of the four-day old deal made with Xi Jinping.
“For many years, China ate our lunch,” Trump said. “Because we had people in this position that I’m in right now that allowed China to get away with absolute murder, and it should have never happened.”
OANN anchor Jack Posobeic pointed out that Phoenix TV, the reporter’s employer, has significant ties to the Chinese Communist Party:
"Phoenix TV has multiple links with the Chinese government
Their CEO Liu Changle is a former PLA propaganda officer
They have been identified by U.S. intelligence agencies as a major overseas outlet used to spread propaganda and promote the policies of Beijing"
“Phoenix TV has been identified by U.S. intelligence agencies as a major overseas outlet used to spread propaganda and promote the policies of the communist government in Beijing. The Hong Kong television station also has close ties to China's intelligence service and military,” according to The Washington Free Beacon in 2018.
Recently, the White House Correspondents' Association tried to ban OANN’s Chanel Rion from the daily press briefings only to have White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham invite Rion back.
Many commentators have noted the significance of American establishment media attempting to forbid a fellow American journalist from doing her job while welcoming in reporters tied to the Chinese regime.
