A Sunday night post stated, “I have decided I no longer wish to live and I will be killing myself tonight."
The incident began on Monday morning, after officers had been monitoring concerning posts Miller had made to social media overnight saying that was suicidal. A Sunday night post stated, “I have decided I no longer wish to live and I will be killing myself tonight. I know this will upset some of you, but I can no longer continue this suffering. I hate my life and every moment is painful. Tonight I end that pain. Do not contact me. I do not want to talk.”

A Libertarian North Carolina state Senate candidate was taken into custody on Monday after an hours-long standoff with local police. During the course of the standoff, Jonathan D. Miller made a number of posts to social media and called into a local news outlet.
In response to a person who commented on the post that “this is not the answer,” Miller wrote, “I have explored every other possibility thoroughly. This is literally the only answer.”
Cary police made a welfare check at around 8:26 am at Miller’s home and attempted to talk to him. Cary police chief Terry Sult said Monday during a news conference that when they found Miller, “He had a firearm and was ordered not to touch it, and he took off running.”
Miller wrote in a pair of posts to X between 9:30 and 9:45 am, “The whole police department is chasing me with guns drawn. This should be fun.” He wrote in a follow-up post, “I've got six shots and the high ground. I hope they don't find me, but if they do it's going to be a hell of a show.”
Sult said the standoff in Miller’s apartment complex went on for hours, and he was taken into custody at around 3 pm. Police said that nobody was injured over the course of the standoff. "He was in a dark place,” Sult said. “Felt like he was on his last leg."
Miller called into WRAL multiple times over the course of the standoff. He said in one of the calls, “Last night I was pretty depressed and suicidal, and I sort of put a suicide note on X, and it has gone quite viral. Actually, millions of people have seen it. I usually get about 50 views on my post, but this one has gone super viral on me. I spent all night crying, and angry, and upset, and depressed, and all the emotions. And this morning I was tired, but I had things I needed to do. And I didn't kill myself.”
“So I got up and made coffee,” Miller continued, “and I had two sips of coffee, and I went outside to have a cigarette, and while I was having a cigarette, a police officer approached me, knew my name, saw that I had a holstered revolver on my hip, so he drew his weapon and told me to keep my hands away from mine. I told him I was going to refuse that order, and I backed away slowly until I was far enough away from him to turn and run, and then I turned and ran into the woods.”
In another call later in the standoff, Miller told the outlet, “They have been chasing me since this morning. They're not very good at it. They really probably should get some more training on tracking somebody down.”
He told the outlet that he was hiding in the woods “Because I don't want them to take me into custody and then lock me up in a hospital.” He added, “If I go to the hospital, I'll spend approximately 15 to 30 seconds every day with a doctor, and that'll be my time to talk it out. He'll write me a [prescription] for a drug that doesn't help, and in a few days I'll be right back where I'm at now.”
At around 1:45 pm, Miller wrote on X, “F*ck they almost got me. They had some hostage negotiator type dude call me. While I was distracted talking with him on the phone they were moving in around me. Luckily I spotted one of them and took off. F*ck that was close. I really should have brought some water.”
He wrote moments later, at around 2 pm, “I fucked up and talked to the negotiator on the phone long enough for them to box me in. They have dogs so I'm probably done for.”
