The Kielburger family, who own and operate the WE Charity, have filed a $3 million lawsuit against independent publisher Canadaland, over allegations made by the outlet that the family's matriarch diverted charitable donations to a family bank account.

According to Blacklock's Reporter, the lawsuit claims that outlet, started by Jesse Brown, waged a "smear campaign" against the Kielburgers throughout the WE Charity scandal last year.

Theresa Kielburger, 78, was accused in a Canadaland podcast of "depositing hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations directly into the family's personal bank account" in the 1990s.

T. Kielburger, a retired schoolteacher, was not "expressly accused" of stealing "the issue of stealing charitable donations is raised." The podcast was called "shocking," "vicious," "callous," "reckless," "high-handed" and "reprehensible," the family's lawyer told the court.

“The statement that Theresa deposited hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations directly into the family’s personal bank account is disinformation created and propagated by the defendants for the purposes of sensationalism,” lawyers said.

Previously, the family was accused by Saturday Night magazine of something similar.

Canadaland broke several stories surround the WE Charity, including their shutting down of operations.
