One of the bills signed officially designates the bald eagle as the national bird.
On Christmas Eve, the White House announced a slew of new laws President Joe Biden had signed into law the day prior. This comes as the Biden-Harris administration has entered its final weeks before Trump enters the White House for his second term.
One of the bills signed officially designates the bald eagle as the national bird, while others signed include the "Stop Campus Hazing Act," which requires institutions of higher learning that receive federal aid to disclose reported incidents of hazing in their annual security reports. The "Beagle Brigade Act of 2023" provides "statutory authority for the National Detector Dog Training Center," which trains dogs to inspect passenger baggage, cargo, mailed packages, and vehicles to detect foreign tests and diseases.
Also among the 50 bills signed was the "No Congressionally Obligated Recurring Revenue Used as Pensions To Incarcerated Officials Now Act," or "No CORRUPTION Act," which makes members of Congress who were convicted of public corruption crimes ineligible to receive retirement payments. According to CBS News, members were previously allowed to continue to receiving checks only after the exhaustion of all appeals.
A number of the bills related to historical sites and land as well as Native American territory, including the "Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park Commission Extension Act," HR 6843, which "expands the boundaries of Atchafalaya National Heritage Area to include Lafourche Parish, Louisiana," and the "Jamul Indian Village Land Transfer Act," which "takes approximately 167.23 acres of specified lands in San Diego, California, into trust for the benefit of the Jamul Indian Village of California." The Lahaina National Heritage Area Study Act will commission a study to see about designating the Lahaina area of Hawaii, devestated in a wild fire last year, as a National Heritage site.
Biden also signed into law a bill that designates a US Postal office located in San Francisco as the Dianne Feinstein Post Office in honor of the late Senator who died at the age of 90 in September, 2023.
