A Wisconsin brewery that promised customers free beer on the day President Donald Trump dies complained that he survived the recent shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner.
Minocqua Brewing Company had previously promoted a message on social media stating it would offer “Free beer, all day long, the day [Trump] dies.”
“Show us this post when it happens in a few months and we’ll make good on that promise,” the company wrote in a post in January.
Following reports of a shooting at the correspondents’ dinner, the company posted, "Well, we almost got #freebeerday. Either a brother or sister in the Resistance needs to work on their marksmanship or he faked another assassination to get a positive news cycle. We’ll never know. Regardless, we stand at the ready to pour free beer the day it happens.”
The brewery is owned by Kirk Bangstad, a former Democratic candidate for Wisconsin’s 34th State Assembly district in 2020. Bangstad also founded the Minocqua Brewing Company super PAC, which has targeted conservative candidates, including Trump. He previously sought to challenge Trump’s placement on the 2024 presidential ballot in Wisconsin.
The company sells politically themed merchandise, such as shirts that read, “I wish it was free beer day.”
The antics by the brewing company are the latest examples of left-wing voices advocating for or defending political violence aimed at the right. The posts have drawn backlash from some Republican figures, including Trump-backed House candidate Michael Alfonso.
"This brewery is owned by a man named Kirk Bangstad, and he’s not just some random crazy guy," Alfonso wrote on X. "Kirk is friends with current Democratic gubernatorial frontrunner Francesca Hong. He previously employed Rebecca Cooke, the Democrat currently running against Derrick Van Orden, and was himself the Democratic nominee against my father-in-law, Sean Duffy, in Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District—where I am now running for office.”
