“Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US.”
Freestyle skier Hunter Hess, 27, said, “It brings up mixed emotions to represent the US right now," igniting a firestorm of sentiment to boycott the Winter Olympics from many in America.
“It’s a little hard, there’s obviously a lot going on that I’m not the biggest fan of and I think a lot of people aren’t,” he added. “Just because I’m wearing the flag doesn’t mean I represent everything that’s going on in the US.”
Another skier, Chris Lillis, although he claimed he would "never want to represent” any other country at the Games, said that he has been "heartbroken" over what has been happening in the US as Trump's immigration policies have been in the national spotlight.
The remarks from Hess, Lillis, and others went viral on social media, with many people saying that they were trash-talking the country that they are supposed to represent at the Olympic Games. One X user, Kevin Miller, posted, "Count me in the boycott."
Ric Grenell, who has been heading the Kennedy Center under the Trump administration, wrote on X, "Privileged Gen Z from Oregon hasn’t traveled much. He’s representing the greatest country in the world….move to Canada if you aren’t proud to wear USA."
USA figure skater Amber Glenn also slammed the United States on the world stage, claiming without any evidence that those who are LGBTQ are having a "hard time" living in the Trump administration.
“It's been a hard time for the community overall under this administration," she said. Glenn also said that she, as an athlete, will not "be quiet" about politics while performing as an athlete at the games.
One X user said in response to Glenn, "And that's why I am not watching the Olympics."
