The mayor's constituents who witnessed the incident described her actions as a "horrible embarrassment."
An investigative report conducted by former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's Office was presented to the Thornton Township Board of Trustees, which revealed that Henyard has a pattern of deception and mismanagement of funds, per Fox News. Henyard is also a Thornton Township supervisor, but recently lost her reelection bid and will be replaced in April. She also may have lost her wig. "There were unconfirmed reports, too, that the mayor lost her wig during the fight," the New York Post reported.
After the report was presented, Brown had some strong words for Henyard during public comment.
"You've been a half-*ss mayor. But if you wanted to get up here and earn some respect, then you should have been able to respond to Lori Lightfoot's report about credit cards. You want to talk about them not coming to work, but we've been hearing what you've been doing while you've been at work," Brown said. "And I'm going to give away the rest of my time because I think, on behalf of the Black Cookout Association, that we better take a vote...that we're going to exchange your black *ss for Stephanie to be the newer member... So, all those against it say, 'nay,' all those in favor say, 'aye.'"
Brown then asserted, "You gone, b*tch!"
At that moment, the room delved into chaos, with Woods rushing in to punch Brown, who returned several blows. Many others joined in the melee, which security struggled to contain. Henyard, who had been seated behind a table at the front of the room, jumped from her seat to join the fight, according to video footage. Police arrived on the scene. The mayor's constituents who witnessed the incident described her actions to WMAQ-TV as a "horrible embarrassment."
"I have never seen a politician jump in and fight like that. It was scary and horrible. It is an embarrassment," said Meghan Dudek, who attended the meeting.
Witness Gerald Williams added, "It should have never come to blows, and Tiffany should have never got involved. She jumped in. She hit her head on a table, so I don't know. She might be injured."
The mayor's attorney, Beau B. Brindley, said in a statement obtained by Fox News: "In the face of endless false accusations and outright lied about Mayor Henyard that are being trafficked on social media by her political enemies, it is unsurprising that violence erupted. In the social media age, unchecked falsehoods lead to misplaced tension and aggression. This episode shows that the campaign of false information about the mayor puts her and others in danger."
The investigation into Henyard revealed that the Village of Dolton received roughly $3 million in payments from the American Rescue Plan. Hundreds of thousands of those funds went missing without receipts. The city's credit card spending also spiked to $779,638 in 2023. The credit card was used to purchase extravagant non-business-related trips to Las Vegas in 2022 and 2023, the Chicago-Sun Times reported. Additionally, Mayor Henyard was recently held in contempt of court on allegations that she stonewalled liquor licenses for months.
