A poll conducted in the immediate aftermath of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union speech on Tuesday night has found that the majority of Americans had a positive reaction to his address.
The poll, conducted for CNN by SSRS, found that 64 percent of Americans who watched the address had a very positive or somewhat positive reaction to the speech. In contrast, 36 percent of viewers had a somewhat or very negative response. The category to receive the most responses was "very positive," at 38 percent.
CNN noted that the "pool of people who watched Trump speak on Tuesday was about 13 percentage points more Republican than the general public." 482 respondents took the survey, which had a margin of error of 5.5 percent.
Of those who watched the speech, 64 percent said that the policies laid out by Trump would move the country in the right direction, while 36 percent said it would move the country in the wrong direction. Those who say it would move the country in the right direction is up 10 percent from a poll conducted in the week leading up to the address.
54 percent of speech watchers said that Trump, so far, has had "the right priorities," up 10 percent from the week prior.
Over half of all respondents said that Trump focused the "right amount" on the topics of the economy and cost of living (53 percent), immigration (56 percent), and foreign policy (62 percent." When asked about the policies trump has laid forth in these areas, 62 percent said the policies regarding the economy would move it in the right direction, while 62 percent said the policies would move immigration in the right direction.
