Democrat New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez weighed in on a new policy that bans men from women's restrooms on US Capitol grounds, declaring that the sex-segregated bathroom policy "endangers girls of all kinds." The comments come in response to House Speaker Mike Johnson's resolution in coordination with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), which was enacted on Wednesday that prohibits men from using women's restrooms at the Capitol building.

When asked about the saga by reporters outside the US Capitol, Ocasio-Cortez claimed that Mace only raised it to secure political donations. "It's disgusting and everybody, no matter how you feel on this issue, should reject it completely," she said.

Mace said Sunday that she would introduce legislation to prohibit men from using women's restrooms after Sarah McBride, an incoming transgender Delaware representative, was elected to Congress earlier this month.

"They're not doing this to protect people. They're endangering women, they're endangering girls, of all kinds," Ocasio-Cortez continued. "And everybody should reject it. It's gross.”

Although Mace’s proposal was no longer required because of the resolution, her words ignited a political firestorm among progressive lawmakers and trans activists, with some even calling for Mace's death.

While Ocasio-Cortez appears to have a problem with the Speaker's resolution, incoming Rep. Sarah McBride issued a statement on Wednesday explaining that while she may not agree with the policy, she would not fight against it like her Democratic colleagues as there are "more pressing issues affecting the country."

Congresswoman Mace was one of the first to raise concerns about McBride, a male who identifies as a woman, using the women's restroom in Congress. Mace, a rape survivor, advocated for sex-segregated restrooms, citing safety concerns.
