Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is looking to be the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee even as some suggest her goal is to seek the Democratic nomination for president in 2028. She told reporters this week that she is “interested” in seeking the congressional position and was in discussions about it, according to the Daily Mail.

The congresswoman is currently the second ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee but has often come in first in publicity and media attention with her instinct for sound bites. As a member of The Squad – a group of progressive Democrats who are sometimes at odds with their own party – Ocasio-Cortez has become a political figure for many left-wing fans. She was the first person to hit one million followers on the new Democratic-friendly Bluesky social media platform, the outlet reported.

As Democrats jockey for committee positions in a House and Senate that they will not control, Ocasio-Cortez is seeking the powerful House minority position, but has an advantage of name recognition.

She will have competition for being the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee as Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) is already in pursuit of that office. He and AOC could be joined by other contenders but so far the Democratic leadership has not indicated that it has a preference.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MA) is the current ranking member of the Oversight Committee, but he wants to move to the House Judiciary Committee and replace Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) who is retiring from the position and has endorsed Raskin to replace him, the Mail noted.

This all comes as there has been more speculation about Ocasio-Cortez entering the 2028 Democratic presidential race. She is only 35 but her national audience outstrips that of many seasoned Democratic politicians, but Ocasio-Cortez has not made any public indication that she will run for the presidency.
