A facility at Guantanamo Bay has long been used to hold and process fleeing Haitians
It has been revealed that the Biden administration is considering utilizing Guantanamo Bay to process the impending flood of migrants from Haiti.
A migrant intake center next to the infamous prison, which is situated in Cuba just 200 miles from the rapidly collapsing island nation, has long been used to hold and process fleeing Haitians, however an expansion has been proposed to handle the unprecedented numbers of people expected to begin making their way to the United States in the near future due to societal collapse.
"I think that we need to be postured appropriately for that," US Southern Command Commander Gen. Laura Richardson told Congress on Tuesday, per CNN, referring to the possibility of an influx of migration from Haiti. "I have put in a request for increased capability to do exactly that, and we are ready ... if we need to deal with a mass migration. We did a full walkthrough of our contingency plan on Gitmo last summer with all of the interagency and all of my components."
In a statement to CNN, a National Security Council spokesperson said that the agency is "closely monitoring the situation and the routes frequently used by migrants to reach our borders," noting that, "at this time, irregular migration flows through the Caribbean remain low."
They noted, however, that the Biden administration is well aware that "economic, political, and security instability are key drivers for migrants around the world."
A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security told the outlet that "those interdicted at sea are subject to immediate repatriation pursuant to our longstanding policy and procedures," and that, "the United States returns or repatriates migrants interdicted at sea to The Bahamas, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti."
Amid ongoing societal collapse in Haiti, American politicians have taken action to prepare for an expected uptick in migration.
On Wednesday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced that he had "directed the Division of Emergency Management, the Florida State Guard, and state law enforcement agencies to deploy over 250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state."Powered by The Post Millennial CMS™ Comments
