"They say it's too dangerous. No one gets to go out.”
After returning from a campaign stop with Vice President Kamala Harris in Pennsylvania, a reporter asked the octogenarian how it felt to be on the stump again, to which Biden responded, “Feels good, except I’m not able to go out into crowds anymore, the Secret Service doesn’t let me.”
The reporter asked why and Biden replied, "They say it's too dangerous. No one gets to go out.”
The Secret Service has been increasing its protective details following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in July.
Throughout his time in the Oval Office, Biden has lamented needing permission from his handlers on the most basic of tasks, including taking questions, and that many have speculated if he is even in charge of his own administration.
In March, Biden said during a meeting, “I have a lot of questions. I better not start the questions. I’ll get in trouble.” He has made similar remarks on multiple occasions including at the G-7 summit. Biden also asked a staffer that month, “Can I take a couple questions?” to which the staffer replied, “Yeah, we’re going to take a few questions.” In May 2021, Biden told reporters, “You guys are bad. I’m not supposed to be answering all these questions. I’m supposed to leave, but I can’t resist your questions.”
Over the summer the drastic measures were revealed that White House staff took to shield Biden from criticism about his age and mental fitness.
In July, Biden announced that he would not seek a second term and endorsed Harris to become the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party after a disastrous showing in a debate against former President Donald Trump. Monday’s event in Pittsburgh was the first time Biden has been on the campaign trail for a joint appearance with Harris since she officially became the Democratic Party's nominee.
