On Friday evening, GOP candidate David McCormick conceded to his opponent Dr. Mehmet Oz in the Pennsylvania primary race for US Senate. A recount was triggered from the initial tally of the May 17th race since McCormick and Oz’s vote totals came with 0.5 percent of each other.
McCormick made the announcement on stage and told his supporters in Pittsburgh.
"And we came so close. We came so close to the goal. By the slimmest of margins, on election night, with thousands of votes outstanding. And it was so much at stake, and that margin so razor-thin, we spent the last seventeen days making sure that every Republican vote was counted. In a way that would result in the will of Pennsylvania voters, be fulfilled. That’s what it’s all about. That’s what this process is all about, and that is what we’ve been so committed to for the last seventeen days," he said.
"But it’s now clear to me, with the recount largely complete, that we have a nominee. And today I called Mehmet Oz to congratulate him on his victory, and I told him what I always said to you: that I will do my part to try to unite Republicans and Pennsylvanians behind his candidacy, behind his nomination, for the Senate."
During the campaign, many of Oz's past statements indicated a more leftist political leaning, from abortion advocacy to suppoet for gender transition for minors.
