The man ran up to the lawmaker, sprayed the substance, and was then tackled by security.
Omar's office released a statement: “During her town hall, an agitator tried to attack the Congresswoman by spraying an unknown substance with a syringe. Security and the Minneapolis Police Department quickly apprehended the individual. He is now in custody. The Congresswoman is okay. She continued with her town hall because she doesn’t let bullies win.”
Original story follows:
Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was attacked during a town hall event on Tuesday where a man charged her and then sprayed her with an unknown substance from a syringe.
The man ran up to the lawmaker, sprayed the substance, and was then tackled by security.
Omar was addressing the crowd at the event about Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, calling for her impeachment when the attack on her took place. After being sprayed with the unknown substance, she continued speaking afterwards.
Those in the crowd reacted, telling others that the man "sprayed something on her" while Omar was speaking. When someone advised her to "go get checked" she said, "We will continue. These f*cking *ssholes are not going to get away with this."
She insisted that she was fine after the incident. "Please don't let them have the show,” she added as she said that the town hall will go on.
"Whatever it is smells so bad, she needs to go get checked," one woman said of the substance. "It’s about your safety, you need to go get checked. It smells terrible."
"It is important for me to continue to lead my Democratic colleague in demanding her resignation," Omar said. "If she does not resign, we’re going to introduce articles of impeachment."
The incident comes days after the shooting of Alex Pretti in Minnesota by Border Patrol agents. Pretti, along with around 50 other anti-ICE agitators were leading an action to disrupt Border Patrol agents who were carrying out an arrest of a criminal illegal immigrant.
