A person was shot during an incident involving US Border Patrol agents in southern Arizona on Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The shooting happened around 7:30 am near milepost 15 on West Arivaca Road in southern Pima County, according to a statement from the Santa Rita Fire District. The individual, who has not been identified, suffered gunshot wounds and was transported in critical condition, reports NBC News.

Emergency crews from the Santa Rita Fire District and American Medical Response provided medical care at the scene.
 

"Patient care was transferred to a local medical helicopter for rapid transport to a regional trauma center," the fire department said in a statement. "The incident remains under active investigation by law enforcement agencies."

“We are working in coordination with the FBI Phoenix-Tuscon Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection” the sheriff's office said in a post.
