Ontario public schools will not reopen in June due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Ford government announced today.
Minister of Education Stephen Lecce told media at Queen's Park on Tuesday that the remainder of the school year would continue online, and that in-class lessons would not return until at least the next school year.
The province's schools have been closed since March 13. The initial shutdown was for just two weeks, but as the virus situation continued to worsen in Ontario, so did the length of time school was out.
"The safety of our children is my top priority and one thing I will never do is take unnecessary risks when it comes to our children," Premier Doug Ford said Tuesday.
"After careful consideration, after consulting with the health experts, it is clear: We cannot open schools at this time. I’m just not going to risk it."
"This wasn’t an easy decision to make, but it was the right decision."
