School boards in Ontario will be returning to virtual learning. An announcement is announced later today.

According to a source close to the Globe and Mail, the province have already been informed of the change. An announcement was made earlier today that Peel Region would be shutting down in-person learning starting on Wednesday.

Peel's Medical Officer of Health Dr. Lawrence Loh made the call using special emergency powers.

Ontario's Progressive Conservative Education Minister had announced earlier that schools would stay open during the province's near-month-long lockdown.

The lockdown was met with criticism from the likes of Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, who said the school closures make "no sense" and that educators should be vaccinated "now."

Peel's decision also contradicts Ontario's Chief Medical Officer who also declared that schools were safe, saying that COVID transmissions rarely take place in schools.

Yesterday, a letter from Ontario's three largest health districts wrote a letter to the Ontario government calling for harsher lockdown restrictions on top of the Ford government's already-pulled "emergency brake" measures.

Officers from those regions called for school closures, business closures, as well as travel restrictions, according to the Toronto Sun.
