"It's really being negotiated now, the details of it, but essentially it's total access. There's no end, there's no time limit."
He said outright that the US would not use force to take the arctic island and after his speech spoke to NATO head Mark Rutte about reaching a deal. As part of his negotiation, Trump dialed down a threat of tariffs on European countries over opposition to a Greenland deal on Wednesday.
"Everything comes over Greenland," Trump told Fox News Maria Bartiromo in Davos on Thursday. "If the bad guys start shooting, it comes over Greenland."
"It's pretty invaluable. It's amazing. You know, Ronald Reagan had the idea a long time ago, but we didn't have any technology at that point. The concept was great, but there was no technology. Now we have unbelievable technology."
"So what are we talking about? An acquisition of Greenland? Are you going to pay for it?" Bartiromo asked.
"I mean, we're talking about, it's really being negotiated now, the details of it, but essentially it's total access. There's no end, there's no time limit," Trump added.
Trump added that the US and NATO have worked out a "framework of a future deal" for the US to have access in the territory.
On Wednesday, Trump said on Truth Social, “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region."
"This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st. Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland.
"Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” he added.
Rutte told Fox News Brett Baier that the issue of whether or not Greenland would remain under Danish rule "did not come up anymore in my conversations tonight with the president."
"He is very much focused on what do we need to do to make sure that that huge Arctic region," Rutte said, "where change is taking place at the moment, where the Chinese and the Russians are more and more active, how we can protect it."
After Trump announced that the tariffs would not go into place, the stock market spiked. Trump has been pushing for the US to acquire Greenland for national security purposes during his first term. During his speech, he said the US has been trying to acquire it for decades and should never have returned it to the rule of Denmark after World War II.
A NATO spokesman told Fox News that the deal is meant to ensure that Russia and China "never gain a foothold" in the territory. European leaders have been up in arms over the intended acquisition.
