President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that a framework for a future deal "with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region" has been made.

"Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region," Trump wrote. "This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.

"Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and various others, as needed, will be responsible for the negotiations — They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

The announcement came just hours after Trump delivered a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he focused heavily on Greenland.

During that address, Trump said the United States is actively seeking to acquire Greenland, calling the Arctic territory a “core national security interest” and arguing that only the US is capable of defending it in an increasingly unstable geopolitical environment.

“This enormous, unsecured island is sitting undefended in a key strategic location between the United States, Russia, and China,” Trump said. “That’s exactly where it is, right smack in the middle.”

“That’s not the reason we need it,” he said. “We need it for strategic national security and international security.”

He also referenced World War II history to justify the US position, pointing to Denmark’s inability to defend Greenland after its rapid defeat by Nazi Germany. “We literally set up bases on Greenland for Denmark. We fought for Denmark,” Trump said. “We saved Greenland and successfully prevented our enemies from gaining a foothold in our hemisphere.”

“After the war, which we won — we won it big — we gave Greenland back to Denmark,” Trump added. “How stupid were we to do that? But we did it.”

Trump argued that Denmark has failed to meet its defense commitments in recent years, citing a 2019 pledge to strengthen Greenland’s defenses. “They said they would spend over $200 million,” Trump said. “They spent less than one percent of that amount. There is no sign of Denmark there.”

While emphasizing that he does not intend to use force, Trump made clear that the United States is serious about negotiations. “I don’t have to use force, I don’t want to use force, I won’t use force,” he said. “All the United States is asking for is a place called Greenland.”
